Samsung Planning to Sell Refurbished Galaxy Note 7R in South Korea by June

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will go down in the history books as the flagship whose popularity blew up in its face when it hit the market (okay, enough with the exploding jokes!) Despite some impressive hardware, the fatal flaw on the Note 7 was the tendency of some of its units to catch fire, which eventually led Samsung to initiate an unprecedented global recall in the smartphone world.

At MWC 2017, Samsung took to the stage to shed some light on what it would do with the large volume of phones that were recalled. Samsung’s plans started off with an option to sell the Note 7 as refurbished units, after due consultation with regulatory authorities, of course.

The first of these plans is soon to materialize in South Korea as early as the June. As reported by ETNews, the refurbished phablet will likely be called the Samsung Galaxy Note 7R, and will be available through all major carriers in South Korea. Since these will be refurbished devices, Samsung is slashing down the price of the device to make it a viable option for many more consumers. The device is expected to cost 700,000 KRW (~$620), which is much lower than the launch price of 988,900 KRW (~$875).

The Galaxy Note 7R will come with a smaller battery, expected to be around 3,200 mAh as compared to the original 3,500 mAh battery in the original. Reports also claim that the device will come with Android 7.0 out of the box, though we advise to take all of the new information with a grain of salt until Samsung confirms them.

Samsung is counting on the Note brand to carry forward the 7R and help cut Samsung’s losses in the whole fiasco. Releasing the Note 7R will also help re-instill confidence in the consumer and answer the apprehensions that the Note brand is now safe to use again, which will be very important if Samsung plans to release the Note 8 in late Q3 this year.

What are your thoughts on the Galaxy Note 7R? Will you consider picking up the device at its rumored price? Let us know in the comments below!
