The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T have had a very good run. The OnePlus 3 picked up the reins for OnePlus after the OnePlus 2 which had its set of problems, and went on to impress a lot of people with its overall package as an affordable flagship. The OnePlus 3T took over from the OnePlus 3, and offered a bit more to let it keep up with the new competition of Snapdragon 821 bearing flagships.
Overall, the OnePlus 3/3T were the closest replacement we had for a Nexus device in 2016. Not only did you get great hardware for its price, you also got a phone which built up a large community of custom ROM enthusiasts. If ROMs, mods and kernels are your thing, the OnePlus 3/3T were one of the best choices to go for in 2016 and early 2017.
But as we move on towards the next cycle of smartphones, OnePlus has started working towards mass production and distribution of their next flagship. After confirming that the next flagship will be called the OnePlus 5 and will sport a Snapdragon 835, OnePlus has announced that the OnePlus 3T is only purchasable till current stocks last. Only a few devices are said to be left in their warehouse, so the announcement was the last call to purchase the device.
The OnePlus 3T will make way for the OnePlus 5, and the timing for discontinuing production for the 3T lines up well with the imminent launch and release of the next flagship. The OnePlus 3 was launched in June last year, so we can look forward to something similar next month.
OnePlus promises that it will continue to bring more software updates and support to the OnePlus 3/3T, but we’ve heard that one before. Only time will tell how much official support the OnePlus 3/3T will retain once the OnePlus 5 comes out. But you can be assured of one fact: the custom ROM community will surely not let this phone die anytime soon.
