Asus ZenFone AR Launches in India on Flipkart for ₹49,999 ($775 USD)

Asus first unveiled the ZenFone AR at CES 2017 this past January, and it was one of the most exciting phones announced at the event. The ZenFone AR was the first phone to come with support for both Daydream VR and Tango AR functionality, and in addition to this, it was also the first phone to be announced with 8GB of RAM.

Although the ZenFone AR has yet to be released here in the United States, Asus has just announced that the phone is now available for purchase in India for ₹49,999 ($775 USD) exclusively through Flipkart.

While the Daydream and Tango features are cool enough on their own, that ZenFone AR looks like a solid overall phone even if you aren’t all that interested in playing around with virtual or augmented reality. The front of the phone features a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with a fingerprint scanner below it.

Powering the AR is a Snapdragon 821 processor, 128GB of expandable storage via a microSD card, and a 3,300 mAh battery that supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0.

Other features include a 23MP camera on the back, 8MP front camera, USB Type-C, and Bluetooth 4.2. The ZenFone AR is running Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, and we certainly hope that Asus manages to get the phone updated to 7.1 Nougat sooner rather than later.

Both Daydream and Tango have a ways to go to prove themselves as reasons to purchase certain smartphones over competing ones that lack these features, and while neither one is perfect quite yet, the ZenFone AR makes the most compelling argument we’ve seen yet for either one. Asus’s offering is considerably smaller and more attractive than the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro (the only other Android phone with Tango AR), and the addition of this and Daydream VR certainly does create for a lot of functionality that other phones simply cannot offer.

If you live in India and are interested in picking the AR up, Flipkart is currently offering a ₹2,500 discount on Google’s Daydream View VR headset if you purchase it together with the ZenFone AR. If you’re a customer with Jio for your phone service, this purchase will also allow you to receive up to 100GB of free 4G data.
