Amazon’s Fire TV/TV Stick is one of the best products out there for streaming all of your favorite TV shows and movies (it’s especially well-loved once you get Kodi on it) but a new software update will enhance your streaming experience if you own another Alexa-powered device, such as one of the Amazon Echo devices. The Fire TV products have been updated to now allows for them to be controlled by Alexa from another device.
Once you’ve installed the new latest software (Fire OS 5.2.4.2 or 5.2.4.1), you’ll be able to use your Alexa-powered device to control most aspects of the Fire TV that typically require a physical remote button press. With the new voice controls, you can have Alexa pause or resume playback of a video, fast forward or rewind, and hop to the next episode. These playback controls currently only work when streaming a title from Amazon Video, but they’re nice to have nonetheless.
Additionally, you can use Alexa to search for videos by genera, title, and actor/actress. Even cooler is the ability to open any app on your Fire TV by saying, “Alexa, open [Enter App Name Here] on my Fire TV.”
This new Alexa support is rolling out now to the Amazon Fire TV (1st and 2nd Generation), Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote, Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote, and the Fire TV Stick (1st Generation). We hope the playback control functionality expands with support for any application on the Fire TV as this should have been a feature from the very start, but at least we know that Amazon is finally considering more tightly integrating their two product lines in this manner.
