Huawei Shares Details About Android Oreo for Mate 9, Android P and Monthly Security Updates

It was a big day today for Huawei as they officially unveiled the Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro and the Mate 10 Porsche Design to the world. The company is putting a lot of focus on AI (just like we saw from Google at their recent launch event) and they’re also working hard from the software aspect of things. At the launch event today, we learned about the company’s plans for their first Oreo update (for the Mate 9), their work on Android P and a newfound emphasis on monthly security updates.

Huawei’s upcoming Mate 10 series devices all ship with Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8.0 built right on top of it. This is great for those who want the latest software experience on a new phone they plan on buying but many are still using the company’s flagship series from last year. Thankfully, Huawei shared some details about the Mate 9’s upcoming Oreo update (which we’ve already detailed in multiple posts) and while we don’t have an exact date set in stone right now, they did say the Oreo update for this phone should be out about four weeks after the Mate 10 is released.

With the Mate 10 series coming sometime in November of this year, this means we’ll likely see their first Oreo update pushed out by the end of December or sometime into the month of January. The release date will depend on if the company hits any snags during the final stages of development. Huawei said that 3 months ago their team began working with Google on Android P and they believe this update will involve “not just features and functionality, but also AI ecosystems.”

This isn’t unexpected as both Google and Huawei are both focusing on AI for the present and future of their smartphone platform. Along with AI, security updates are also important for the team and this will become even more critical as the Android platform grows as a whole. Similar to Google and other smartphone OEMs right now, Huawei has said they will be targeting a monthly security update cycle for their new flagship smartphones.

Right now they’ve been doing a quarterly security update cycle and says a monthly update pattern is a target for them, but not something they can promise right now.
