Jolla’s Sailfish X OS with Android App Support Available for Sony Xperia X Today

After Jolla excited the consumer market and switched to a B2B model, the company has been working closely with Sony to keep its consumer smartphone software alive. They introduced their latest version of Sailfish OS for the Sony Xperia X late last month and followed that up with some build instructions for those who want to compile it on their own. Now, the company has added the software package for the Xperia X to the Jolla shop for those who want to purchase it.

Jolla has been through its ups and downs as the company had some issues delivering crowdfunded tablets to all of its customers and was on the edge of closing up shop entirely. They were able to obtain some funding from outside investors who then convinced them to switch from a B2C company (business to customer) to a B2B company (business to business). At the time, it was thought that it would be the end of Sailfish OS for consumer devices but that didn’t turn out to be the case.

They began working with Sony and have been able to breathe some new life into the 1-year old Xperia X from Sony. Last week, Jolla announced they would be releasing a flashable image of their Sailfish X OS for the Xperia X  but that it would take them a bit of time to get things situated and ready. Today, the company has made that flashable image available in the Jolla Store for those who are interested in purchasing it.  So if you already own the Xperia X then you you have a couple of choices to make.

For one, you can build Jolla’s Sailfish X operating system following their instructions for free. However, for those living in the EU, Norway, and Switzerland who can’t or don’t want to compile it, then you can purchase the Sailfish X software with Android application support directly from Jolla starting today for 49,90€ (including VAT).

To clarify, this is Sailfish X OS software package for the Xperia X and what you’re paying for are the system image so you can manually install it onto your own Xperia X. This includes Android support, predictive text input, and MS exchange support for the Xperia X with software updates for at least one year. After that year, a continuation program will follow if Jolla decides to add additional software to the Sailfish OS asset (additional cost).
