Telegram v4.4 Update Adds Live Locations, New Media Player and More

While it’s obvious that Facebook has been able to amass a huge community around its social applications (WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger), there are still other popular options out there. WeChat is huge in the eastern market and Telegram’s open source platform has continued to gain popularity since it was released. A new update rolling out this week brings the application up to version 4.4 and it includes a live locations feature, adds support for more translation languages and more.

While other messaging platforms tend to be closed source and receive slow updates, Telegram has been able to leverage an enthusiast community. There may be some questions when it comes to their method of encryption, but they continue to offer incentives to those who feel they can crack it. With each new update, the platform receives more and more features with the latest update focusing on sending your location, redesigning the media player and improving the user experience of large group chats.

Live locations is a new feature that will let you broadcast your current location to any chat in real time. There are a number of ways this can be used and they give an example of a group of friends who are trying to coordinate while they’re at a large event together. If multiple people in a group share their live location to each other, then Telegram will combine this data into a single interactive map to show where people are currently at.

The in-app audio player has been redesigned in this update to better support the playback of MP3s and other music files you send and receive. They’ve launched a new translation platform for the suite of Telegram apps to add French, Indonesian, Malay, Russian and Ukrainian to their 13 supported languages. Lastly, as mentioned the team has improved the user experience of large group chats so you can now recognize messages from admins by the new ‘admin’ badge. Another change here allows admins in supergroups to control whether new members get to see the earlier message history.
