Update for Sony Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact Brings Image Distortion Fix

The Sony Xperia XZ1 and the Xperia XZ1 Compact were announced in August as the successors to the Xperia XZ and the Xperia X Compact. The Xperia XZ Premium remains the king of the lineup thanks to a 5.5-inch 4K display, but the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact have respectable hardware of their own, including 5.2-inch and 4.6-inch displays and 19MP cameras with all-new sensors and bigger-than-average pixel sizes. Thanks to new firmware, they’re getting even better.

Sony Mobile released an update this week for the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact series, according to Xperia Blog. The software, which has the build number 47.1.A.5.51, is based on Android 8.0 Oreo and folds the Xperia XZ1 series into the same software branch as the Xperia XZ Premium.

It includes the November 1 Android security patch and focuses on image quality, which some users found to be lacking. While initial reviews for the Sony’s 2017 device line found the cameras to be an improvement over past Xperia devices, it soon became obvious that they suffered from image distortion.

Sony issued a software update in October for the Xperia XZ Premium that added a distortion-mitigating option in the camera settings, and at that time said it would roll out the same fix to the Xperia XZ1 and the XZ1 Compact in November. With this week’s update, Sony has delivered on its promise.

If you don’t see the new firmware yet, don’t worry. It’s expected to start rolling out across all regions over the coming weeks.
