If you’re the proud owner of an Amazon Alexa-enabled device, good news: It’s getting a new feature. This week, Amazon rolled out an update that adds a new alarm option. Once it’s enabled, you’ll be able to set an alarm that’ll wake you up to the song of your choice in the morning.
You can do it with a voice command, in fact. You just have to say something like, “Alexa, wake me up at 8 a.m. to Money by Pink Floyd,” or, “Alexa, wake me up at 8 a.m. to Pink Floyd,” for a random song selection. If you can’t name an artist, Alexa will accept vaguer answers with just a genre.
Smartphones have had musical alarms for a while, but as more and more people buy connected speakers like Google Home and the Amazon Echo, they’ll continue to see a lot of development attention. Amazon, for example, recently launched new Echo products, perhaps the highlight of which is the Amazon Echo Spot. It’s an alarm-shaped Echo speaker that has its own display for showing the time (and other information), and it might just be the ideal bedside smartphone replacement.
Some smartphones (such as the iPhone) limit you to a specific platform when it comes to alarm music. Even 3rd-party applications typically only let you pick an MP3 that you’ve downloaded. The new Amazon Echo alarm, though, lets you select songs from Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, SiriusXM, iHeartRadio, and other platforms.
Alexa’s musical alarms feature is available now on Alexa-enabled devices.
