Asus’s ZenFone 4 is powered by the company’s ZenUI skin on top of Android 7.1 Nougat. Asus confirmed that an Oreo-based update would rollout to the ZenFone 3 and the ZenFone 4 series in the first half of 2018, but now, we’re finally receiving more precise information. According to Green1_ASUS, a moderator in the ZenTalk forums, the ZenFone 4 (with the model number ZE554KL) is expected to receive Android Oreo in December.
When the update hits devices, it’ll bring more than just Oreo. Asus said that it’s cutting back on bloatware, and that the new version of ZenUI has 16 pre-installed apps compared to the old version’s 35.
The ZenFone 4 series, for those who don’t recall, launched in 2017. The highest-end model is the ZenFone 4 Pro, a flagship device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, 6GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, and a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display.
The ZenFone 4 (ZE554KL) was the mid-range smartphone in the company’s portfolio — it’s got a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display, a Snapdragon 630 or Snapdragon 660 SoC (depending on the variant), and 4GB of RAM coupled with 64GB of storage. It has a dual-sensor rear camera comprising a 12MP Sony IMX362 sensor with 1.4 micron pixels and a f/1.8 aperture, and a 8MP sensor with a 120-degree wide-angle lens. The front-facing camera is 8MP, and the battery size is 3,300mAh.
The ZenFone 4 was launched in the US on October 31, but it has yet to roll out to major markets such as as India.
At one time, Asus wasn’t a brand known for its smartphones. That changed in 2014, when the Taiwan-based smartphone maker (OEM) released the first few handsets in its ZenFone series: The ZenFone 4, the ZenFone 5 and the ZenFone 6. The following year, Asus replaced the aging ZenFone lineup with the second-generation ZenFone 2 series. ButAsus’ momentum slowed in 2016 after one of its principal supplers, Intel, exited the smartphone chip business. Asus was forced to turn to Qualcomm, and the prices of its smartphones went up as a result, and resultingly, the ZenFone 3 series didn’t follow in the footsteps of its predecessors when it came to popularity.
But Asus has seen something of a resurgence with the ZenFone 4. And with any luck, Android Oreo will propel it to even greater heights.
