The Google Home Mini, a more affordable version of the Google Home, was launched last month alongside the newly released Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL. Shortly after release, however, a rather odd bug was discovered by AndroidPolice wherein phantom touches would occur on the top causing the Home Mini to constantly trigger and incidentally record everything it heard. This was caused as previously the top button in the center of the device could be pressed instead of calling out “Hey Google” or “Ok Google.” Google has since disabled this feature across all Google Home Mini devices to avoid the issue, but this also meant a user could not pause or play any audio on the device by pressing a physical button. Many users were disappointed that their Home Minis lost this functionality over a bug that seemed to affect only a small amount of users.
Now, Google has arrived at a compromise which allows users to pause and play music via a long-press of the volume keys on the device. The volume keys were not disabled by the previous update, so this is an effective compromise for the removed functionality. This will work for all playing audio and all you have to do is simply hold your finger on either of the volume keys on the device to start music or stop the currently playing audio. It is unlikely we will ever see the top button work on the device again as the problem is a hardware issue, but it’s great to see that Google is still trying to bring the functionality back for users even if having to long press a volume button to pause audio is a little bit more inconvenient. It’s better than not having the option to play/pause audio on the device without needing your voice.
