MIUI 9 Global Stable Update Rolling-out to the Xiaomi Mi Max and Mi Max Prime

The Xiaomi Mi Max was a big-screen smartphone launched by Xiaomi in May 2016. It had a humongous 6.44-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 system-on-chip, 3GB of RAM with 32GBs of internal storage, a 16MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, and was powered by an enormous 4850mAh battery. The phone was originally launched with MIUI 7 on top of Android Marshmallow.

Outside Xiaomi’s home market of China, the Mi Max was launched in a few international markets such as India, where it was accompanied by the India-exclusive Mi Max Prime. The “Prime” variant of the Mi Max changed the Snapdragon 650 SoC for a higher-end Snapdragon 652, and had 4GBs of RAM coupled with 64GBs of storage, while retaining the rest of the specifications.

The Mi Max might have been a niche device with a display that was closer to the size of a tablet display rather than that of a smartphone display, but it proved to be surprisingly popular with consumers. The device combined the functions of a small tablet and a 5-inch smartphone. This was because it had a 6.44-inch display in relatively small dimensions, using a high screen-to-body ratio.

The Mi Max and its Prime variant were such a success that Xiaomi released the Mi Max 2 earlier this year—another big-screen smartphone with a 6.44-inch display, an even more enormous 5300mAh battery, and a better camera. However, the Mi Max 2 uses the Snapdragon 625 chipset, which is theoretically inferior compared to the Snapdragon 650 and 652 chipsets found in the Mi Max and Mi Max Prime respectively. It means that even now, the first-generation Mi Max remains a relative powerhouse. It even received a stable Android 7.0 Nougat MIUI 8 update in June.

Now, Mi Max and Mi Max Prime users are in for a treat, as Xiaomi has started a roll-out of the MIUI 9 Global Stable update for the devices. MIUI 9 Global was announced on November 2, and started rolling-out to multiple devices in the same month. The Redmi Note 4, Mi Max 2, Mi Mix 2, Mi Mix, Mi 6, Redmi 4 and the Redmi Y1 are some of the Xiaomi devices which have already received the MIUI 9 Global Stable update. Now, it’s the Mi Max’s turn.

The Mi Max gets the MIUI 9 V9.1.1.0 update based on top of Android 7.0 Nougat. The update has a size of 1599MB and 1396MB for the fastboot and recovery versions respectively. The Mi Max Prime gets the V9.1.2.0 update, which also has the same update size and is available in fastboot and recovery versions as well.

MIUI 9 Global brings improved performance, updated animations, split screen, App Vault, and localisation features for India. The full changelog of the MIUI 9 Global Stable update for the Mi Max and Mi Max Prime is available at the source link.
