Vivo X20 Plus UD with Synaptics In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Passes Through TENAA

Vivo, a subsidiary of BBK Electronics, is one of the world’s top smartphone manufacturers, and is a force to be reckoned with in China and India. However, the company isn’t well-known in Western markets. It launched the Vivo X20 Plus last year as its flagship smartphone, with specifications that include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 system-on-chip, a 6.43-inch Super AMOLED display, 4GB of RAM paired with 128GB of storage, dual rear cameras with a 12MP primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture and 5MP camera, and a 3,900mAh battery.

Last month, Synaptics announced its range of Clear ID in-display fingerprint sensors, and stated that they’d been adopted by a “top five global smartphone OEM”. At the time, it was expected that Vivo would be the first to use Synaptics’ optical in-display fingerprint sensors. That was confirmed at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, where Vivo showed off the world’s first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The company didn’t reveal any details about the device, which is rumored to be the Vivo X20 Plus UD, but said that it would launch in the first half of 2018.

Now, the Vivo X20 Plus UD has received certification from TENAA, China’s electronics regulatory authority. The Vivo X20 Plus UD is similar to the standard Vivo X20 Plus, with the major exception being the fingerprint sensor. The standard Vivo X20 Plus has a rear fingerprint sensor, while the X20 Plus UD variant does not have any visible fingerprint sensor on the front or back. Instead, it uses Synaptics’s in-display fingerprint sensor.

The Vivo X20 Plus UD has a 6.43-inch Full HD+ (2160×1080) AMOLED display. (Synaptics’ in-display fingerprint sensor needs an OLED display in order to function.) The rest of the specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC, 4GB of RAM paired with 128GB of storage, a dual camera consisting of 12MP and 5MP sensors, a 12MP front-facing camera, and a 3,800mAh battery.

As of now, the X20 Plus UD’s launch timeframe remains a mystery, but now that it’s received TENAA certification, we expect a launch isn’t too far away.
