Here are the Vivo Smartphones That Will Receive Android Oreo

Vivo is a lesser-known, more budget-oriented Chinese Android OEM, so it comes as a bit of a surprise that it’s upgrading some of its flagship devices to Android Oreo in the coming months. According to an announcement the company made on Saturday, the new firmware is expected to drop in mid-April or later, and it’ll come with a new iteration of Funtouch OS, the Android skin that ships on all Vivo smartphones.

You’ll find a list of devices receiving the upgrade below.

Folks in Vivo’s beta program will get the update first, and it’ll include support for “smart assistants”, “word books”, and “other functions”, according to the announcement.

As for whether the devices in line for Oreo will gain Project Treble support, it’s unclear at this point, but unlikely. Many smartphone makers have shied away from supporting Treble, including the likes of Samsung, Nokia, and OnePlus. Then again, we might be in for a pleasant surprise when the updates come out.

Vivo’s upgrading a surprisingly large number of phones to Oreo, especially considering its devices are what you might call “lower tier”. They’re typically pretty difficult to import in the West, and it shows the company is serious about supporting its high-end devices — even if they aren’t that old. The oldest handsets on the list only go as far back as November 2016.

There’s no word regarding the company’s older mid-range smartphones yet, but perhaps a later announcement will break the news that they’re getting upgrades, too. There’s always a chance that Vivo’s other smartphones could receive Oreo in the coming months, but given the budget nature of the company’s devices, it’s just as likely they won’t. That’s a shame — right now, many of the recently released devices in Vivo’s lineup are being ignored.
