OnePlus 5 Android 8.1 Oreo update now in beta via OxygenOS Open Beta 6

The OnePlus 5 was released with OxygenOS 4.5 on top of Android 7.1 Nougat. In November, it received its first Open Beta build based on Android Oreo, and OnePlus rolled out the stable Android 8.0 Oreo-based OxygenOS 5.0 update in December.

Now, the company has released OxygenOS Open Beta 6 for the OnePlus 5. The notable change in the new Open Beta build is that it is based on Android 8.1 Oreo. Android 8.1 brings few on-the-surface changes, so it’s not a major update over Android 8.0. However, it does have under-the-hood improvements such as the addition of the Neural Networks API.

Apart from Android 8.1 Oreo, the new Open Beta build brings other improvements as well. OnePlus has implemented a new auto pick up gesture in the Phone app: users can now answer incoming calls by raising the phone. There are more clock styles for Ambient Display, and the security patch has been updated to the February security patch. Also, there are new optimizations in gaming mode, that include power saving and pausing adaptive brightness. OnePlus Switch now has support to migrate application data, which is a useful feature that will make it much easier to switch between devices. Finally, there are the usual bug fixes and improvements.

Here is the full changelog:

OnePlus 5 users can now install the Android 8.1 Oreo-based OxygenOS Open Beta 6 by either updating to the beta OTA (if they are already running the latest Open Beta), or by flashing the full Open Beta ROM. It should be noted that once users migrate to the Beta path, they will continue to receive Open Beta OTA updates, which means they will no longer receive Official Stable OTA updates. Moving back to the Official OTA path from the Beta Path will require a full install and a clean flash, which means that users have to do a full wipe of their data and cache.

As a reminder, the OnePlus 5 was released in June 2017 with a high-end list of specifications. It has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, 6GB/8GB of RAM paired with 64GB/128GB of storage, 5.5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) 16:9 AMOLED display, dual 16MP + 20MP wide-angle + “telephoto” rear cameras, 16MP front camera, and a 3300mAh battery. The phone shares its internal specifications with its successor, the OnePlus 5T.
